  System Overview

The Anatomy of an Illuminated Crosswalk

A basic Illuminated crosswalk consists of the road markers embedded in the road and a means to activate the markers.

There are two basic types of systems; a hard wired system and a wireless system. Silicon Constellations only offers a wireless system. With a wireless system, no power or signal cable is necessary as control is achieved via an RF signal and each part of the system is solar powered and allows for easy expansion of crosswalk systems. Silicon Constellations has developed a comprehensive set of components that meet and exceed MUTCD and CalTrans requirements.

Crosswalk

     Road Markers

Each road marker is solar powered and during daylight provides enough power to run the light and charge the backup battery for night or dim light operation. The backup batteries can provide up to 60 days operation, depending on the usage of the crosswalk.

In deciding how many markers to use, Silicon Constellations typically gives each lane 2 markers with a final marker for near the curb. This arrangement is then duplicated on the opposite side of the crosswalk.

Crosswalk

There are two variations of the road marker; LumiStar and LumiStarlet. LumiStar is the road marker of choice for crosswalks and is bi-directional. LumiStarlet is uni-directional, is smaller than LumiStar and is designed for lane delineation applications.

Activator Switch

     Activation

Activation is usually done by an active method, where the lights are turned on when a pedestrian pushes a button. The button is connected to the wireless activator and an activation signal is sent to the road markers. The key component is the activator, which in Silicon Constellations’ parlance refers to the wireless signal box. This is typically mounted on a pole close to the crosswalk and is connected to a push button on the same pole. The Activator is solar powered.

     Additional Components

Together the road markers and activation provide a basic crosswalk system. However as illuminated crosswalk systems are not as common as signal lights, drivers can be unsure of the appropriate behavior to adopt when they see the flashing road markers. To aid the driver further, other components may be added to provide greater advanced notification to the driver. Typically MUTCD standard signs W11-2, W16-7P, and at schools S1-1 or beacons are added, or a voice module or active pedestrian detection that automatically activates the crosswalk.

     Wireless LED Advanced Warning Signs

Silicon Constellations offers a solar powered illuminated W11-2 Advance Warning sign as well. The advanced warning sign can be placed at the crosswalk or point in advance of the crosswalk. When placed at the crosswalk there are two installation configurations. One where the wireless activator is built into the illuminated sign. The other configuration leaves the wireless activator and advanced warning sign as separate components. There is no operational difference between the two configurations, the former merely allows for improved aesthetics.

     Wireless LED Beacons

Flashing beacons are a popular means to notify drivers of a crosswalk or school zone. Silicon Constellations also offers solar powered, LED flashing beacons. The beacons are typically single head and placed in advance of the crosswalk on each approach side.
